Hunting Area WMU 356
Wapiti & Big
Smoky Rivers
The May bears hunts are in
WMU 356 and are hunted by jet boat and
ATV's. This area has 2 rivers, the Big Smoky and the Wapiti, which are excellent for bear hunting
and the photographer.
Bears are spotted
feeding up big poplar trees and on
side hills, and walking the river
shores. The elevation is 2300 feet.
Hunts start in the morning at
9:00 am. Hunters start by
cruising down the Wapiti River from
Base Camp and up the Big Smoky River
for about 25 miles. Hunters
will start floating and cruising
back to Base Camp during the
afternoon.
A 19 foot Misty River Boat is
used during these Bear Hunts,
complete with a 115 hp Evenrude 80
Jet Leg for shallow river conditions
plus an 18 foot Lund Boat complete
with a 25 hp Prop Leg Yamaha for
high water conditions. Both
boats are complete with life
jackets. Both rivers tend to
be very calm.
An 8 Wheel - Amphibious Argo is
used in interior hunting for cut
lines, oil leases and beaver dams.
